Periodvis har de legat i tr\u00e4da och betats vilket skapat f\u00f6ruts\u00e4ttningar f\u00f6r en mycket artrik flora och fauna. 2023 bildades naturreservatet S\u00f6dra Ripa Sandar och bildar ett n\u00e4tverk med skyddade sandmarker mellan \u00c5hus och Helge \u00e5. Landskapet \u00e4r n\u00e4stan helt \u00f6ppet och h\u00e4vdas idag fr\u00e4mst genom bete.
