Tillsammans med \u00f6arna s\u00f6derom halv\u00f6n \u00e4r berget skyddat som Japans f\u00f6rsta nationalpark 1936. Topparna n\u00e5r upp till 1400 meter och h\u00e4r finns l\u00f6vf\u00e4llande l\u00f6vskog som ger vackra h\u00f6stf\u00e4rger. Floran och faunan \u00e4r rik med flera s\u00e4llsynta arter. Den aktiva vulkanen hade utbrott s\u00e5 sent som p\u00e5 1990-talet och det finns m\u00e5nga spar av utbrottet. P\u00e5 sluttningen ligger onsenbyn Unzen med flera aktiva k\u00e4llor och kala bergssluttningar med svavel\u00e5ngor. Ett naturinformationscenter ligger I onsenbyn.
